Do you work on churches & heritage buildings?

We repair and re-roof churches, chapels and listed buildings across Cumbria and the Borders using appropriate traditional materials — natural slate, stone slate, lead and lime-based detailing — working with the consents process and providing drone survey imagery for quinquennial inspections and faculty applications.

Heritage roofs are unforgiving of the wrong material. A church roof repaired with modern substitutes usually fails again at the junction between old and new. We work in the materials the building was built in, and we are comfortable with the paperwork: faculty applications, listed building consent and the evidence an architect or surveyor needs.

What matters here

How we handle this work

  • Appropriate materials

Natural and reclaimed slate, stone slate, lead flashings and lime-based bedding — matched to what the building already has.

  • Consent-aware working

Listed building consent and faculty requirements are identified before quoting, and our reports are written so they can be submitted as supporting evidence.

  • Drone survey without scaffolding

High and fragile roofs can be inspected in detail from the air, which keeps quinquennial and pre-application surveys proportionate in cost.

  • Phased repair for fundraising

Where funds are raised in stages, we set out the work in phases that each leave the building weathertight.

Services

Most relevant services

  • Heritage & Traditional Roofing

Heritage roofing is the repair and renewal of roofs on listed, historic and traditionally built properties using materials and techniques appropriate to the original construction — natural slate and stone slate, lime mortar, traditional leadwork and hand-formed detailing — and carried out within the consents the building's status requires.

  • Roof Surveys & Condition Reports

A roof survey is a documented assessment of a roof's condition, remaining service life and defects, delivered as a written report with photographs and prioritised recommendations. It is used for property purchases, planned maintenance budgeting, insurance, dilapidations and settling disagreements about whether a roof needs replacing.

  • Roof Repairs

Planned roof repair fixes an identified defect — slipped slates, cracked tiles, failed flashings, valley or ridge problems — before it becomes water ingress. Repairs are appropriate where the covering and structure are otherwise sound and the fault is localised.

  • Roof Leak Detection

Roof leak detection traces water back from where it appears inside to where it actually enters the roof. Water frequently travels along battens, rafters and purlins before it drops, so the ceiling stain is often several metres from the defect. Detection combines internal tracing, external inspection, drone imagery and, where needed, controlled water testing.

  • Commercial Roofing

Commercial roofing covers survey, repair, recovering and planned maintenance on non-domestic buildings — offices, schools, churches, retail units, industrial premises and public sector estates. The work differs from domestic roofing chiefly in scale, access, programming around building occupation, and the documentation required.
